Pittsburgh Breast Implant Defects Lawyer

Our skilled product liability attorneys have a strong history of fighting for those who have suffered from the results of defective products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently recalled textured breast implants from the pharmaceutical company, Allergan. The FDA discovered that those who have received the Allergan textured breast implants have been linked to a high-risk cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

In any medical procedure, patients expect products to be safe and trust that they are making a secure decision. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. The safety of the Allergan breast implant product has been in question since 2017. A recall was resisted due to the lack of study conducted on the product. Two years later, the correlation between the product and BIA-ALCL is significant with approximately 84 percent of BIA-ALCL diagnoses linked to Allergan textured breast implants. Those with the implants are six times more likely to develop cancer. If you suffered harm due to an unsafe procedure, call a Pittsburgh breast implant defects lawyer at our firm for a free case review.

BIA-ALCL

Despite the name, BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer. It is a very rare cancer of the immune system, which is why the correlation between recipients of Allergan implants and BIA-ALCL is disturbing. The cancer is a slow-moving cancer that can often be treated by the removal of breast implants and scar tissue. Although it is slow moving, in rare cases the cancer can spread to the lymph nodes throughout the body and can be fatal.

Signs and symptoms of BIA-ALCL may include:

  • Swelling or pain around the breast implant
  • Development of lumps
  • Changes in shape or size
  • Skin irritation

If diagnosed with BIA-ALCL, the FDA proposes the removal of the implants and the scar tissue.

Despite the concerns, if one is free of symptoms and not diagnosed with BIA-ACL the FDA and other health authorities do not recommended removal or replacement of textured breast implants or tissue expanders in asymptomatic patients. Our breast implant defects attorney in Pittsburgh is prepared to help you pursue a legal claim.
