Happy National Left Handers Day

Are you a lefty or a righty?

If you are predominately left-handed like me, today is our day of celebration!

Did you know that only about 10 percent of the population is left-handed? While there is no scientific proof, it seems that a child will be left-handed if one parent is a lefty too. My mom was left-handed, and her mom was left-handed. I was the only child out of three in my immediate family who ended up being left-handed.

Did you know that parents of left-handed children used to force their kids to use their right hands? This is said to have happened because parents feared their children would be shunned in the community for being left-handed. It is said that the great Michelangelo was left-handed and had trained himself at a very young age to become right-handed.

While being left-handed is more accepted today, the occurrence of left-handers hasn’t increased over the years. It is often said that those who are predominately left-handed feel awkward in a predominant right-handed world and do not bring attention to the fact that they are left-handed because it will be noticed by someone soon enough and undoubtedly brought up as a topic of discussion. Did you know that eight United States presidents were left-handed, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama?

While being left-handed is still uncommon in today’s world, don’t be shy about it and show the world just how brilliant and unique you are!
