Favorite Summer Activities

June 20 officially marks the start of Summer 2021. Every year, I get excited thinking about all of the fun activities I can start doing as the days get longer and warmer.

Here are a few of my favorite summer activities:

  1. Hiking

One of the easiest things to do in the nice weather is going on nice long hikes through the woods. If you’re lucky enough to live near good hiking trails, it is a great way to get outside after a long day at work and exercise while clearing your mind. If you have a little more time, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are home to numerous scenic trails through the Appalachian Mountains. I highly suggest taking a weekend to go backpacking or camping this summer to get in touch with nature. Nature always feels so peaceful and pleasant in the summertime --unless it starts raining on you.

  1. Golfing

Last year, I started developing an interest in golf as a fun activity to take on during weekends. Whenever I get the chance, it is a great way to relax and spend time with friends. Plus, it gives me something to work on improving every time I go out. I see it as a fun game and also a challenge to improve. As a bonus, I’ve always found the aesthetic and serenity of a golf course to be relaxing and enjoyable.

  1. Outdoor Basketball

Even though you can play basketball any time of year, I always loved outdoor basketball in the summer. Every year, some friends and I get together on weekends to shoot hoops on the blacktop. Not only does it provide some good-natured competition, but it also great exercise. Running up and down the court and getting your heart rate up is great for building your endurance

  1. Swimming

Although I don’t go swimming as much as I used to, heading to the pool was always one of my favorite things to do with my family every summer. Nothing beats the heat like doing a cannonball into the deep end of a swimming pool. Plus, I always found it relaxing to pop in some headphones and lay back in a lounge chair out in the sun.

  1. Family Time

As I get older, I appreciate time with family more and more. I’ve begun to realize how important those moments are as time seems to go by at a faster pace every year. Although family time is important year-round, the summer weather provides some unique opportunities to get together outdoors to enjoy the sun. I’ve always enjoyed afternoon cookouts at my grandparent’s house that ended in relaxing by a campfire and enjoying each other’s company. It doesn’t matter what you do when you’re with the people you care about most.

As you can see, to me, summer fun means getting outside more often. I spend far too much time strapped down at my desk on my laptop in the colder months that I usually can’t wait to get outside and get active. But these are just some of my favorite activities. What are your favorite summer activities? No matter what you’re up to this summer, I hope you and your families enjoy it as much as possible!
