My family took an opportunity on a recent Saturday to make the trip to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset, Pa. In January, we had the opportunity to visit the National 9/11 Memorial in New York City. The design of that Memorial was so impressive and so broad in scope it’s hard to believe how creative people can be with such hallowed, honorable places.
After returning home, we decided we needed to get to Somerset to see the memorial there. The Flight 93 Memorial is located where the brave passengers of Flight 93 had been able to overtake their hijackers and save the U.S. Capital and/or the White House from the tragic events of 9/11.
The Memorial is well done and serves as a great reminder of the courage and bravery exhibited by those everyday Americans who became heroes after learning what had been happening that morning.
The Memorial includes the somber crash site as well as a visitor center which that exhibits dedicated to the events of 9/11 and the steps taken to honor and preserve the memory of those that died. The site also includes the “Tower of Voices.” The tower stands 93 feet tall and will, when complete, include 40 specially designed wind chimes that will continue to give voice to the memories of the 40 Americans who died at the site.
The site was a great place to visit and allowed us to social distance and view the memorial comfortably. So if you’re looking for a day trip, I’d suggest the trip to Somerset.
