I know a lot of people went to the shelters during the first few months of Covid-19 and brought home shelter animals, which is awesome. Yet our shelters have many dogs eager for good, loving homes.
Understand that you don’t have to get a puppy. You can get a senior dog and give it a good home until they pass over the Rainbow Bridge. A lot of these poor babies are brought to the shelters and dumped because people don’t want to deal with their health problems or give them the love and care they deserve during their final days.
Only a very special person can do this for a senior dog. It’s like hospice care for humans. I always wonder how someone could abandon their best friend who gave unconditional love for all those years. I’ll never understand it.
Then there are the poor dogs dumped on the side of the road because their human families don’t want them anymore for whatever reason, or just can’t deal with some of the issues that come along with raising a dog. Dogs are like children -- each and every one of them have different personalities. They need to understand what you want from them and this means taking the time to work with them to help them understand what you’re trying to teach them. Not everyone is a trainer, but you can call for help from a local trainer in your area. They can give you instructions on how to handle what you may feel your dog is doing wrong. Sometimes it immediately clicks and other times it takes love, patience and understanding.
So please, if you have room in your home and in your heart, go to your local shelter or go to a rescue website and bring a new member home to the family to love. I have four four-legged children and wouldn’t give them up for anything in the world. Barley, Guinness, Jack and Rotis are my boys that sleep, eat and keep me company. My boys take care of me and I will take care of them until the end of their lives.
Dogs make our lives so much better because all they give you is unconditional love. So please “Adopt and Don’t Shop.” Also, if you see dog fighting, please understand it’s abuse and needs to be reported to your local authorities.
