Safety Tips for Halloween

Halloween is a great time to be creative and spend time with family and friends. This year’s Halloween, though, will be a lot different than in years past.

That said, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a fun and spirited Halloween. Whether you’re going trick or treating or if you’re just watching your children, you should keep the following tips in mind to ensure the safety of you and others.

  1. Do Not Run

Do not run while going house to house. There will most likely be a lot of people out and about in your neighborhood on Halloween night. Running will only increase the probability someone will be injured. Walking house to house will help ensure you or your loved ones do not trip and fall or run into someone else. It usually turns pretty dark by the time trick or treating is in full swing, which may cause you to not see a potential hazard or another person. Do your best to take the proper precautions to protect yourself and others on Halloween night by walking to each house.

2.   Maintain a Safe Distance

This is more significant now than it has been in years past. Although it is respectful to not crowd others while waiting to receive some candy, it is even more important with COVID-19. To allow everyone to enjoy their Halloween night please be respectful of those around you. Allow others additional space and time to grab their candy. Doing this will enable everyone to enjoy their trick or treating experience.

3.   Cross the Street at Designated Cross Walks

A lot of neighborhoods have designated cross walks for people to cross the street. Make sure to utilize such cross walks. It is tempting to run across the street to get to as many as houses as possible, but to make sure you and your loved ones have a safe Halloween experience use designated crossing areas. If your neighborhood does not have a cross walk, try to cross the street near a stop sign where vehicles are required to stop. In addition to crossing the street at a safer location, make eye contact with drivers of motor vehicles near the stop sign before attempting to cross. By doing so, you and/or your children can make sure the driver has in fact seen you before you try to cross the street.

4.   Bring a Flashlight

As most of the time spent trick or treating is in the evening, make sure you bring a flashlight with you. Having a flashlight on hand will allow you to see others around you and enable you to become more visible to others, especially motor vehicle drivers. It is important to be visible as the night starts to become darker and the ability to see becomes more difficult.

5.   Wear Appropriate-Fitted Costumes

No matter what you or your children plan to wear on Halloween, make sure the costume fits well. Wearing a costume that is too big could cause you to not see as clearly or trip and fall. By taking a simple step to ensure your costume fits well, you can help avoid creating a hazard for yourself and others.

Halloween is a time for creativity, excitement and fun. If you consider the above tips, you will be well prepared to enjoy your Halloween experience.
