Summer Olympics

The summer Olympic Games are here! There is nothing better than watching athletes from all over the world come together to compete. One of my new favorite sports to watch, is artistic swimming. If I were to ever enter the Olympic Games, this is the sport I want to play. I’m not a strong swimmer, so artistic swimming would certainly be a long shot. But if I could somehow magically obtain the skill, artistic swimming would certainly be my competition. The sparkle and shine of the costumes is what originally drew me to the sport. After watching several routines, I could see the precision and athleticism all of the swimmers possess. Artistic swimming could be seen as a combination of a few sports encompassing one competition. An artistic swimmer must be flexible like a gymnast and have the speed and accuracy of a speed swimmer.

The swimmers are doing movements that require an extreme amount of athleticism. They make it appear so effortless and graceful in their routines as they push their bodies to the limit. Even if the swimmer is in pain, they must maintain their composure and smile through the routine. They must learn how to control their breathing all the while doing flips in the water and kicking aggressively. Free routines are calculated by execution, difficulty, and artistic impression. Swimmers must correctly execute moves in precise unison. The moves must have some level of difficulty and must entertain the audience. I’m excited to see who takes home the gold medal in this year’s Olympics. Go Team USA!
