A Time for Reflection

During the holiday season, people often get caught up in the moment. We get so busy thinking about our schedules and what needs to get done that we forget to slow down and appreciate everything that we’ve accomplished. However, there is something different about this year. The end of 2019 marks the end of a decade. As we approach 2020, take a look back on the past decade and consider how much has happened in your life.

I, for one, have just lived through only my second full decade of life. Naturally, so much has happened in that time. Since 2010, I started and finished middle school. I got my first after school part-time job. I passed my driver’s test. I earned my Eagle Scout. I gained three more siblings. I graduated high school. Now, I am a junior in college preparing to embrace full-fledged adulthood over the next few years. I feel so far away from that pre-teen boy I was in 2010.

I am certain many of you feel far from your 2010 selves. I encourage you to look back and think of all the things you’ve accomplished and all the lessons you’ve learned. What are some things you wanted to do but never had the chance? What are some things you never thought would happen? What are some goals you accomplished that you are proud of? Think about your past and let it help guide your future. The past decade taught me to set goals for myself and work hard. I also learned that people come and go in life, but I will always have my family. Thinking back on every lesson in the past 10-years motivates me to make my next 10 even better.

So, during this holiday transition, slow down, relax, and reflect. Enjoy your extra time with loved ones and the start of a new decade.
