Tips for Preventing Falls at Home

Most everyone has experienced falling down at some point in their life.  When you are younger you tend to get right back up.  However, as we get older, we can be more susceptible to falls and serious injuries, which can have long-term effects on our lives.  Some of us may be older ourselves or have loved ones who are older.  Whatever the case may be, there are many things that we can do to help prevent falls.  Here are some suggestions.

1.   Check the rugs and flooring.  You can easily get your foot (or walker, etc….) caught on the edge of small throw rugs or defects in your flooring.

2.   Check the lighting.  Many falls occur due to not being able to see, so make sure you have adequate lighting and especially nightlights.

3.   Wear appropriate shoes.  Many people slip and fall due to the sole of their shoe, so make sure you have good tread.  Also, make sure your shoes fit well and do not easily come off your foot.

4.   Install special safety equipment.  Railings, grab bars, handles, and chair lifts are just some of the special equipment that can help prevent falls.

5.   Stay hydrated.  This can help you prevent dizziness.

6.   Get regular eye exams and wear your glasses.  Changes in your eyesight or not being able to see clearly can lead to falls.

7.   Check with your doctor about your medications.  Some medications can have side effects, so it is important to understand if they might affect your balance.

8.   Exercise.  Any movement you can do to stay in shape may help prevent falls.

9.   Get plenty of rest.

These are just some of the tips that can help prevent falls and keep you safe.  So, if you are concerned that you or your loved ones may be at risk for falling consider making some of these changes.
