The Beginning of Trick or Treat

Halloween parties can be fun for adults, but at its core, the holiday is for kids. They dress up, go door to door, and collect candy.

Most American kids, however, would probably be disappointed if they’d go back to the 1930s and early 1940s. According to History.com, children were given homemade cookies, pieces of cake, fruit, nuts, or even coins.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that candy manufacturers began to jump in. They promoted their products as not only delicious but a convenient, more affordable giveaway.

Then, in the 1970s, wrapped, factory-made candy was viewed as the only acceptable thing to hand out to all the little ghosts and goblins that showed up on people’s doorsteps due to safety reasons.

These days, parents are urged to inspect all candy and goodies. But, thankfully, the time-honored tradition of trick-or-treating continues to thrive.

Enjoy the Halloween season!
